BOARD ENVY

(Photos taken from: here, here, here, and here.)

I’ve been saving my pennies for a new longboard. I get so excited just thinking about it!! I haven’t decided all the logistics quite yet. I’m still in the honeymoon phase and I’m no where near ready to commit to anything! For now, I’m just constantly browsing the internet and finding envy-worthy boards all over the web-creation.

Can’t wait to shed the envy and ride a new log!!

A DESERT COOL

(Top: Samudra, Jeans: MM6 by Martin Margiela, Flats: Cynthia Vincent)

Being in the desert ain’t so bad. I kind of like it. Hot days, chilly nights. Beautiful sunsets, starry skies. Long stretches of sand, different shades of brown. It’s got everything expect for the ocean. It’s a nice change of pace. There’s something very beautiful about the desert. I found myself staring out into the vast endlessness of cacti and sand wondering how and why people decided to settle in such an otherwise desolate place. In some ways, I feel like the culture is so much more vibrant here to make up for a lack of scenery. You know? I’m just stoked that I don’t have to wear a coat at the end of November!!

Just keepin’ my cool in the desert heat.

AWAY, ON THE ROAD

(Top: T by Alexander Wang, Shorts: 7 For All Mankind, Flats: Cynthia Vincent)

Got to hop off the island for the long Thanksgiving weekend and hit the desert road. I shoved a pair of shorts in my luggage right before I left for the airport and so glad I did! I guess it never occurred to me that the desert is an exception to the seasonal rule. I’m loving that I don’t need to wear a coat!! I’m down south enough that it doesn’t really call for it. Hello, me… Drrr.

So I decided I like spending the holidays away from home. It makes it really feel like a vacation. It’s so nice feeling like you have absolutely nothing to do. It’ll make it hard to go back to some responsibility. Eeek! But for now, I’m going to enjoy some nice canyon hikes, attempt to do some rock climbing, and keep driving down that dusty travel road!!

Gonna keep roooollin’!!

THE SELBY | HITOSHI UCHIDA

(Photos from: here)

Mr. Selby got to hit up Hitoshi Uchida’s pad in Kamakura, Japan a while back and I nearly melted when I first saw it. What a dream house! What a cute little dream family!! I’ve actually never heard of Hitoshi-San or his shop J’Antiques before so I did my research. I’m not surprised that one of the hippest, quaintly eclectic vintage shops comes out of Japan. The aesthetic of their shop and home seem a bit different (small and crowded vs. vast and spaceous) but still equally cool. A vintage, coastal cool for sure.

The Uchida’s whitewash house definitely belongs on the beach. Or I belong in the house. Whichever.

ALL THE PRETTY HORSES

(Top: Samudra for Project Paz, Shorts: True Religion, Shoes: Toms)

A while ago we went on a little bike ride out in the country, through the hotel, and out to the stables. Over the last couple of years I have developed what a typical [but late-blooming] little girl wants for her birthday. A pony. Do you remember those girls? Well, I’m a few years beind. But in my defense I never say I want a “pony.” You know, the way they all say “pooonnyyyy!!!” in some exasperated, spoiled way. No no no. I just really want to be a horse person. I want to be one with the horses. Ehehe. A horse whisperer maybe?? No, what I really imagine me doing is riding a beautiful ‘stang bare-back with a stampede of horses through an empty green meadow in nothing but a white linen dress and the wind wiping through my hair. Yes!!

I think horses are one of the most beautiful creatures walking this earth. One day I am going to go out into the west and work on a ranch or a farm. I know I would have to start at the bottom. No glitz and glam here. Probably have to pick up poop and fork hay for a while. Eventually the rancher or farmer will see my willingness and natural ability to bond with the horses and want to help me learn everything there is to know. Kind of like the surf movie North Shore. But with horses instead of waves. That is exactly what goes through my head when I dream about horses.

But for now, my bike will have to be my trusty steed.

SASS & BIDE | THE WINNING DAY

(Photos from: here)

I came across the new Sass & Bide The Winning Day collection that came out a couple months ago and fell in love with.. EVERYTHING! Such amazing use of color and silhouette. I took one look at it and the images took me to a place.. and I feel like if fashion can do that it was done right.

Now I’m going to scroll through pages of S&B blogging.

THE BUMBYS | AN APPRAISAL

(Photo 1 taken from Jennifer Binney, All other photos taken from: here)

One of THE coolest concepts I have ever come across. A man and woman dressed in disguise sitting at typewriters, You stand in line for your turn. You’re next. They look you up and down then start typing vigorously. A paper. An appraisal. It may seem a bit shallow and ruthless..  but that’s the point right? Maybe not to take it all so seriously. You know?? It’s like a parody. Our looks, how we see ourselves, etc. So what if they give me a low appraisal?? Or a high one? I would hope I won’t mind either way.. heh.

But I love their undisclosed identity. Who knows who and what they really look like?! Are they married? Are they brother and sister? What’s their real hair color? Eyes? Does Jill Bumby like to wear makeup? Does Gill Bumby eat his eggs sunny-side up? Their ambiguity makes the concept so much more alluring.. I think!

But judging by the appraisal they gave my friend it seems like they have a pretty accurate way of judging a person by their looks. For most, probably. Maybe not spot on but they get the idea about you. The best part is that Gill slyly passed my friend after the fact and whispered to her, “9.6.” Gahhaha!

All I know is I hope when I’m in NY next I can get an appraisal!

FASHION NEUTRAL

(Top: Vince, Leather Pants: Vince, Scarf: Echo, Jewelry: Hinu Exclusive)

I have to say, being fashionable in Hawaii can be hard. Very hard. Itʻs so easy to just roll out of bed, down to the beach, out to lunch, and out on the town in a pair of drawstring shorts and tank top. All the time, everywhere. But I guess thatʻs just my projection of style?? Right? That is where I stand in the fashion world. Pajamas everywhere I go. Yikes. To be honest, I have a very clear idea of how I see my style and the direction I want it to go.. so to speak. Itʻs just a matter of weather I execute it. Or dish out the money to buy what I want (Isabel Marant, Dries Van Noten, Mara Hoffman.. pleeeease??) Sometimes I look through websites, blogs, etc. and it seems like so much work to be decked out all the time. I get exhausted just looking at all those girls dressed up all the time. Completely exhausted.

But I guess thatʻs the beauty of living in Hawaii. You can pick and choose and it does not really matter. Itʻs that Hawaii cool style. Just living in Hawaii puts you on a different fashion level.. kind of. So who really cares what youʻre wearing , right? No one really pays much attention or notices if youʻre wearing a pair of boxers or a designer dress. I think. I hope… Hahaha. Maybe not. But more so, thatʻs who I am. Sometimes I laze around in my boyfriends t-shirts and a pair of old jeans. Other times I wear my Vince top and leather suede pants. Just because. (Which by the way, I donʻt particularly like wearing the same brands together but somehow this worked. And who wears leather pants in Hawaii anyway?? I DO!) Thatʻs the quality about it. Because I donʻt think people care all that much, I really feel like Iʻm doing it for me I guess. Iʻm putting on those diamond earrings and mascara for me. Not for her or him or you.

In that way I am very neutral about my style and the way I incorporate fashion into it.

INDIA, INCREDIBLY

(Photos: Jennifer Binney & me.)

I was just feeling a little land-locked and bland lately so I decided to look at some travels from the past. Last year I got an opportunity to go to India. Yes, Incredible India. An 18 hour flight from Hawaii and the longest plane ride ever. Well, until I go to South Africa of course. But talk about colors, vibrance, and life. These are just a few shots from my travels. I think I may have had a lot more photos but things happen in India and when I got there my Canon broke (Among other things. Iʻm pretty sure India is a black hole for electronics.) I was so sad. So sad. But I got to use a Leica instead. No big deal, right?

I got to see such amazing things packed with so much culture and history. I got to meet amazing people who have been all over the world and done extraordinary things. It was such an eye-opening trip. I want to go on 73 more trips like them, or more.

Probably more.

R44 A/W 2011 | GONE NORDSTROM

A friend of a friend (my way of try to be a little bit cool) just launched their R44 A/W 2011 collection at Nordstrom. The big boys. I’m not typically interested in men’s fashion but I thought this video was pretty cool. I especially like the directors cut.. let’s me marinate in the concept longer, you know? It also makes me want to hang with friends in a cottage on the weekend in fashion-cozy clothes.

Don’t it?
