WHERE THE RED FERN GROWS

(Photos from: here)

Loving the layout of this editorial from B Magazine. The photo layering, the contrasting imagery, the pops of color, the chic bold prints, the forest backdrop. Super sassy. It’s like a fashionable girl from New York getting tossed into the wilderness and becoming a hunter/gatherer. Ehehe. Heh. I’m almost positive I have had hair days like that. Nice to know it can be high-fashion and not just a tangled mess from the sea.

The photos were taken by Tom Allen, styled by Steven Westgarth and modeled by Dempsey Stewart. I love seeing raw photography mixed with high fashion. Such a breath of fresh air, really.

I wouldn’t mind getting a few thistles stuck in my hair too.

FREE IN JANUARY

(Photos from: here)

Feeling inspired by the LA section of Free People’s latest catalog (January). The colors and the mood really encompass that wandering, stylish, surf/skate lifestyle. It’s the kind of clothes that can take you from miles on the road to days on the beach. And maybe a couple of city strolls. You never know.

But there’s something about catalog shopping that really gives me a sense of nostalgia. When I was 12 years old I used to flip through the pages of Delia*s (remember how they put a little Astrix instead on an apostrophe?? Trés chic for a little tween on a budget!!) wanting to live the same feeling the pages evoked. I even called in and made an order a couple of times!! Nothing will ever replace catalog-in-the-mail feeling. Not even internet window shopping.

Ohhh.. it’s time to feel wild and free for all of January!

TALES FROM THE BEACH

(Photos by: Brooke Dombroski; Bikini Top: Brazilian Showroom, Bikini Bottom: Indah)

I just had an amazing weekend spent entirely on the beach.. soaking in some rays, getting pounded in the shore break, chatting with friends, building tents on the beach, and having a few cold ones at sunset. I’m exhausted. I haven’t had that much sun in a very long time.

Now all I want to do is curl up in bed and dream about my tales from the beach..

LOVE AFFAIR WITH THE SEA

(Photos from: here)

Aren’t these the perfect mood photos?? Gahhhh. I can’t wait to spend my weekends at the beach, in the ocean, on the sand. It is the perfect way to unwind and relax. Some times I have to remind myself how blessed I am to live in Hawaii and have the ocean as my back yard.

I am having a terrible time articulating how I feel today but I’m pretty sure these photos speak for themselves. I don’t really think I can describe it any better..

..I just want to have a love affair with the sea.

SLIDING DEL MAR

(GoPro Photos by: TR)

After being in California and surfing a couple times I think I could cold-water-surf on a regular basis. Oh you know.. I could get used to having numb hands and feet for a couple hours after a surf session. But really.. growing up and surfing in Hawaii my entire life gave me a bit of a stunted experience with wetsuits and kelp. The first couple of times I had to wear a wetsuit it took me nearly 10 minutes to put it on. It was a struggle. But now I must be a pro! Master wetsuit wearer! Bahaha!

Staying in Del Mar had to be the best part of my California vacation. We didn’t drive once the entire weekend we were there. We rode bikes every morning to check the surf. We ate at yummy local eateries. We slept in every morning. We surfed with dolphins and hung out with a seal or two. It was pretty magical.

Best of all.. sliding Del Mar was so dreeeamy.

OLD TOWN CRUISING

(Photos by: TR; Top: Vintage Escada, Shorts: 18th Amendment, Flats: Gap, Jewelry: Hinu)

While I was in California I loved hanging out in the old parts.. like old town. Yes I know it’s touristy. But I love the old buildings with character and nostalgia of the Spanish-Mexican architecture and the plentiful of colors and the plethora of textures. One day I want to build a little studio that looks like all those old buildings. I think it would make a fantastic little place to nest.

Anyway, the vintage silk Escada strawberry top I am wearing is one of my favorite pieces in my closet. I scored it a couple of years ago in a thrift store and it is still hasn’t lost its luster. When I first picked it out I got made fun of by my sisters. They told me I pick clothing that looks like it came out of our grandma’s closet. Oh, but they were mistaken. Granted I made a few adjustments (like taking off the overly-tacky gold buttons) I get so many compliments on it!! And those are the best kind of fashion finds. Unique, colorful pieces that no one else will have.. unless someone (like my grandma) digs it out of their attic and starts prancing around in it. It is vintage after all. Ehehe.

And so, I thought it was so appropriate to be wearing something old somewhere old.

ON THE EVE

(Photos by: various.. haha.)

I thought I would share a few snaps from my New Years Eve. Definitely an interesting and different one.. that’s for sure. We started the night off right with some Kaito Sushi.. and then a cab drive that ended with my suede leather pants ruined by someones split beer in the back seat. Booooo! Thank the heavens my Fabio-esque shirt covered the mark (for the night. hehe.)

At the end of the night, it was all worth it. Good times and good company. And to wake up on New Years Day with an ocean view in Del Mar wasn’t half bad either (thank you SO much Jim and Michele!!!)

Now with my vacation over and tons of photos I think the next week might be dedicated to my vacation! Hope it won’t feel like the dreaded invite-my-friends-over-to-watch-projections-of-my-vacation-that-they-don’t-really-care-about-and-will-probably-fall-asleep-half-way-through!!!

But more important.. on and over the eve and into the new year!!!!
