WANDERLUST

(Photos from: here. Harper’s Bazaar Australia March 2012)

This editorial affirms that I need to travel more. This speaks to me more on a travel level than fashion. The images, landscape and projections are stunning. I’m convinced I was meant to be like this. Fashionable and traveling to faraway destinations.. presumably living out of a simple tent and using traditional razors to shave.

And I have to get my hands on some fine weave fringe. I’ve been obsessed lately.

But for now, to dreams of being a nomad and the life of wanderlust.

SUBWAY FASHION

(Coat: Burberry Look-a-Like; Actual: All Saint’s, Shoes: Miu Miu Look-a-Like; Actual: France Sarto, Purse: JadeTribe Look-a-Like, Actual: India purchase.) Ehehe. Underground fashion statement!

This, my friends, is as good as it gets for me in terms of New York fashion. In other words, it was so dang hard for me to get dressed in my regular attire when it is less than 70 degrees out that looking decent in cold weather is a challenge. That must sound terribly bratty but it’s true. I’m so used warm weather I had close to no clothes going to New York. I wanted to feel cute while I was there (who doesn’t??) and it was a challenge.

But on a less bratty-like note, it’s really hard to be confident about your dress in a place like New York.. during fashion week. Especially when you’re on a budget. Everybody strutting around looking fabulous made me consider dropping $1600 on the Proenza Schouler PS1 I’ve always wanted. That’s when I knew New York was getting to me.. who do I think I am even considering the idea of a $1600 handbag?? A months rent for a 2-bedroom 1-bath house with a carport and utilities included.. crazy!

But it all brings it down to perspective though.  And that’s why the “look-a-like’s” in the description are a bit of a joke. I don’t think anyone who can drop a couple thousand dollars on a handbag would be taking the subway anyway. I’m a downtown kinda girl. A budget kinda girl. My fashion will always be underground.. and on sale. Haha.

Thus, my subway fashion moment.

PS. On this particular night we were headed to the Philip Lim after party.. that we never got in to (hey hey, we were actually on the list!!) Kind of ironic though, considering the whole concept behind this post/outfit/etc. Haha. At least we got to watch small asian girls trying to fight the bouncers. Eheheh!!

HAIR THERAPY

Hello again world!! I have been away for so long doing all kinds of things (sleep not being one of them) and I finally have time to sit down at my computer, look through photos, and reminisce on NY passed.

One of the most exciting parts of my trip was getting my hair cut by Gerald DeCock. Before I went to pay him a visit my hair was in dreads. Literally. I don’t know if it was the New York weather and the fact that I don’t own a brush or ever really brush my hair.. but by 11am I had legitimate dreads forming on my head. My hair was in bad shape. I’m pretty sure my split ends had split ends. The only thing I had going for me was that ombre look everyone is trying to achieve. But mine was just sun/salt water damage.

Now, Gerald is one of the most interesting people I’ve met thus far. He lives in the penthouse of the Chelsea Hotel. He has got great style (love all his boots.) He is a phenomenal hairstylist.. and he allows crummy people like me to venture up to his pad to get my hair did. The whole experience was an experience. He cuts hair dry. Who does that?! He does. And my hair feels amazing. For a split second I thought I would actually need a brush. But his cut reassured me that none of that would be happening.

Oh, and his place. Yes, his place. A little gypsy heaven. I was snapping so many photos. If Gerald wasn’t so groovy he probably would have kicked me out. He painted all the walls himself, and has all kinds of trinkets and hangy-dangy’s, and there is so much color and stimulation you feel like you got knocked back to the 70′s. I don’t mind. I just wish I had a chance to peek up at his terrace! He’s been featured in all kinds of publications including one of my favorites: The Selby.

In a nut shell: The guy is talented, humble, radical, gypsy, unique, artist, classy, and any other kind of adjective in between that usually doesn’t fit into an ordinary person’s description. And did I mention my hair feels like baby swan feathers??

The whole experience was much needed hair therapy while I was in New York.

DREAMING OF KAUAI

(Photos by:me & she; Top: Gap, Shorts: Wonderland Denim, Sandals: Cynthia Vincent, Clutch: India travel find)

I’m cold. I’ve only been in New York for a week and I am already looking forward to wearing shorts again and basking my unexposed legs to the sun. What a brat. But the idea that moving to New York might be real is really making me homesick. Yeah, you got that right. I never thought I would but I am considering the possibility of moving to NYC. I was never that person. I thought New York would eat me alive. But I guess not. I guess I am pretty adaptable.. or crazy stupid. I can’t decide.

But I love the beach and sea breezes and surf and maybe I should stop there.. But it can be an especially hard decision when I can’t wear outfits like these. Shorts, loose fitting top, sandals always. Exposed body parts basically. And toes that can really stretch out. I know I am being dramatic. There are other seasons besides winter. But I am stuff it in now and my body is frozen. Gah, what a decision I need to make in the next couple of months.

In the meantime, I will be dreaming of lazy days on Kauai.

SALT SURF

(Photos by: Salt Surf)

I got to spend my Sunday hanging out with the Salt Surf boys. Yes yes, a surfboard and lifestyle company in New York. It would be a really bizarre concept except for the fact that the surf lifestyle is blowing up in New York. And I hear Rockaway is real fun. We considering going out to the coast. But I’ll pass on surfing on the east coast this time of year though. No thanks.

Anyway, we did lots of fun things. New York is kind of fun. I had my doubts.. but hanging out with boys-who-surf-who-live-in-the-city make it really easy to consider living here. I got to check out their Williamsburg studio and I finally got my hands on a their rad t-shirts. I’m wearing one as we speak.

Hoping to get in more salty sessions with these guys.

In the meantime, I need to defrost from the wind chills and lube my lips.

OPEN WATER IN FASHION

(Photos by: me)

I’ve been so busy the last week I haven’t had any time to sit down and do any computer, internet, blog, etc. etc. etc. activities! I’m in NEW YORK! I’m in New York for FASHION WEEK! It’s my first one so I feel like a little kid who has gone to Disneyland for the first time. Haha. Nah, I’d like to think I’m so cool and non-chalant about it. But really. It’s been crazy. No sleep, lots of work. Not so glamorous. I promise.

I’m currently here for Dezso by Sara Beltran. I had the opportunity to come and help out for her amazing presentation. And I’m not just saying that. It took my breath away. All the hard work paid off. Sara is brilliant. And I’m not just saying that either. Her talent is incredible and her vision is so clear, so unique, and so innovative. Aside from her jewelry she designed all her own furniture, fixtures, and stationaries for the show. That is talent. Woman of the jewelry century.. and all the above.

I think the jewelry pieces speak for themselves. You could wear any one piece with a plain t-shirt and jeans from Wal-Mart and look completely chic. Statement pieces all the way. I’ve never liked diamonds in my life until I saw Dezso. I’ve never seen a jewelry collection that I wanted to own every piece. Put it on my tab.. layaway. I’ll spend the rest of my life paying it off. Thanks.

The whole concept of the show was perfection. Open Water. Plain wetsuits, wet hair, electric waves, layers of jewels. The perfect combination of wave-ocean chic. Right up my alley. Stewing up a plan to get my hands on some of the goods. Meheheh.

So, I’ll be swimming through the rest of New York for fashion week in the Open Water.

PS. I have a ton of photos to go through from all sorts of Kauai fun (Still, I know. Has been.)  and New York. Will try to find the time to make it all apart of the blog world!

THE BOTTOM LINE

(Photos by: she; Bikini Bottom: Tori Praver Swimwear)

A couple of things I’ve realized within the last couple of days:

1. I don’t know how to “model”.. I don’t like to “model”.. so I laugh in all my photos.

2. I’m obsessed with bottoms. Any kind of bottoms.

I actually don’t mean to be obsessed with bottoms. I really need new tops. My shirt/blouse/t-shirt wardrobe has been eaten alive by cheeky little bugs on a vengeance. But I somehow always find bottoms. I found these Tori Praver Swimwear bottoms on sale and had to get them. Floral, feminine, and ruched. Perfecto beach lounging bikini bottom. I actually don’t own any string bikini’s because I thought my hips gushed out of them. But these somehow work. Not complaining.

In that respect, I don’t think we should ever limit ourselves in fashion, style, clothing, etc. etc. etc. Actually, don’t limit yourself in anything. But that’s a whole another ball of butter.

The bottom line is.. I’m loving these bikini bottoms!

THE SHORT ON SHORTS

(Photos by: me and she; Shorts: Wonderland Denim by Jess Shedlock)

Made last minute plans to spend the weekend on Kauai. Best decision of 2012 so far. What a dreamy weekend. It is so tempting to leave life behind and go live like a hippie on the garden isle. I’m sure no one would notice! First stop: Polihale. The weather was perfect! From where we staked out there wasn’t another soul in sight. Just thinking about it makes me sigh deeply. Such a little dream world.

I recently got these shorts from Wonderland Denim by Jess Shedlock and practically lived in them all weekend. I couldn’t take them off! They now bear the signs of true travel attire.. including a big coffee stain on the crotch area. Still rocked um! Jess is pretty amazing. She took the time to make the shorts exactly how I envisioned them.. which is pretty cool considering I’ve never had a pair of custom denim made before!! Definitely check out her work. It’s almost like the shorts are meant to be for certain people.. so maybe you’ll find your shorty match!

In the meantime, you’ll be seeing more Kauai throughout the week. Definitely more shorty short shots. Hahh.

Keeping it short on the shorts. Long weekend, short shorts.

MORE BEACH & BIKINI

(Video by: TR)

I felt like this video needed a post all on it’s own. Lazy beach days, streaming old Hawaiian music to make us feel like we’ve gone back in time. I don’t need to say much. All the babbling is in the post below.

Now all I want to do is lay around, listen to good music, and just be.

BEACH & BIKINI

(Photos by: TR; Bikini Top: Raisin, Bikini Bottom: Mikoh Swimwear)

I had every intention of posting about beaching at Gas Chambers weeks ago.. but it never happened. Coincidently,  the topic of high-waisted bikini bottoms came up within the last couple of days. Perfect opportunity.

Now, this is getting into some real man repeller territory. Something I think the repellizer herself would be proud of. The high-waisted bikini bottom. My boyfriend doesn’t like them. He gave me a funny look when I shimmied them on for the first time. A guy told my friend [who has the same bottoms] that she had “granny panties.” She might never be able to wear her bottom with the same confidence again.

Then there are those who rave about them. Impressed that we who brave the beach with such bottoms can really “pull it off.” People ask what brand they are, where they’re from. The real slick guys with style compliment cooly.. indubitably impressed. And in all honesty, it doesn’t really offend any one either. Young or old (no skimpy or saggy going on here!).

Obviously you know where I stand. I where them. I love them. The bottoms are unique and flattering. They keep everything tucked and never come off when I’m surfing. If anything, I probably get more attention wearing these bad boys on the beach then any of my other bikinis. Double looks.. and maybe some snickering and snide remarks. But whatever. To me, these Mikoh bottoms are fashion. The stuff that gets people talking and turns some heads. Something hard to come by in the surf/swimwear industry. So you may like it.. you may not. But that’s what it’s all about!!

And so, I will continue to brave the beach with bold bikini statement.
