STREET STYLE MUSING

Daily [fashion] life has been limited to the same denim shorts, whatever tank top I can find that isn’t dirty, and bare feet. I feel like I need to do a complete revamp of my closet so I have no choice but to wear what I’ve deemed as my “fashionable” threads. It’s been a fashionably bland month.

On the bright side, it is always nice to skim through the internet getting inspired by street style fashions. I especially love Tommy Ton‘s close attention to detail and color. He always shoots the most vibrant and mix-matched outfits. It definitely gets me motivated and makes me realize why I love fashion so much. There’s a beautiful thing about the right colors, in the right place, on the right girl, shot by the right person. It’s a kind of mastery of real life art.

When there’s a lack of fashion in my life I am street style musing.

LOST HIGHWAY

I am so looking forward to this movie and thrilled that they captured the essence of highway living in a fashion editorial! If you don’t know what movie I’m talking about than get ready for this years cult favorite; On The Road. A flick based of the novel [by Jack Kerouac] that defined a generation in the late 50′s and is gonna rock our generation too. I currently have the book in my purse and intend to read it for the second time in preparation for the movie.

I hope the fashions in the movie are just as good as this editorial. I love when they can incorporate current fashion trends and [fall] season with a time period spread. And I really hope Garrett Hedlund looks that good too. I’m not usually the kind of girl that lusts over celebrity and famous persons but my goodness does that guy shine. He has this unassuming and strong quality about him. And those eyes are piercing. He had me at Friday Night Lights even with an unattractive mullet. But I digress. This isn’t that kind of blog. Haha.

More importantly, Kerouac’s words from this particular book [and now movie] are words that I [want] live by and what really lights a fire in me:

“The only people for me are the mad ones, the ones who are mad to live, mad to talk, mad to be saved, desirous of everything at the same time, the ones who never yawn or say a commonplace thing, but burn, burn, burn, like fabulous yellow roman candles exploding like spiders across the stars and in the middle you see the blue centerlight pop and everybody goes ‘Awww!’ ”

AN ISLAND VIEW

I finally had a little bit of time to go through all of the photos from our amazing adventure on the sea. I feel like these photos [somewhat] depict the ocean experience. And I mean somewhat because really.. it’s so much better when you actually do it. Experience it. Photos are cool but actually embarking on adventures like this one are worth more than a thousand words.

If I could talk about what a good [island life] day would be like it would include a boat ride, rock jump, cave dive, and underwater zen garden swim. I’ve spent all of my life in Hawaii and I’m still floored by it’s beauty. I cannot believe how beautiful blue the pacific ocean can be day after day and how good it feels to be in it.

I’m really looking forward to seeing the Island View Hawaii website and other little digital goodies that my friend is working on. It’s gonna be rad. I can feel it.

MER DAY

My friends and I went on a little boat riding adventure in the pacific ocean today and it was amazing!! There are exciting things happening on that boat and I cannot wait to share it with you!

In the meantime, I have a recent obsession with my new Mer Bag. I had the pleasure of going to the Mer Bags studio while I was in New York and cannot get over how amazing these bags are! I’ve already taken many trips on my bike and the beach with it. And now I can say it handled on a boat with me!

The whole concept of this particular bag is to be able to put all of your wet bikini’s, suits, towels etc. without it soaking through your bag! More so, they are made for the urban [active] junkie. If you’re a surfer, biker, skater, sailor, or walker Texas ranger you need this bag. These things are heavy duty, made with industrial materials, and made to last. And the entire company is based in Brooklyn, New York. I mean the entire thing. Everything is designed, produced, manufactured, packaged, and shipped out of their rad studio. It’s a beautiful rarity.

Since I got my bag it is the first one I grab when I’m heading out the door or going to the beach. I especially love the colors. It looks a little like a firefighting outfit doesn’t it?? I decided its perfect for biking safely on the road. No one wants to hit a big yellow dot on wheels, right?! I will be getting good use outta this bad boy bag for sure!

ALL THE LITTLE THINGS

I have been going through a bit of a fashion lull for the past week or so. I’ve actually been getting all of these great steals and have all these little numbers that I should probably be getting some use out of. Unfortunately, the last couple of weeks have been pretty fashion-less for me. Besides my late night creeping on all the Spring 2013 Collections online.. very little effort on my personal style has been made. My body and closet has been style-neglected.

But I guess that happens some times.

And I kind of like it. It’s nice to escape from a world of well-curated outfits, color matching, and thoughtful accessorizing. Not that I do that all the time. Because I don’t. Sometimes I imagine myself wearing knit gaucho pants, linen tunics, oversized headbands and Birkenstocks all the time. I am sort of into that kind of thing. I could sell soap at the farmers market and regularly attend co-op yoga. And you may think I’m joking but that life is very appealing to me. How do people do it?? I wanna know!!

Hippy dreams aside.. I had to buy myself a new pair of sunglasses because I lost [yes, lost] my favorite pair of Chloé’s! It was a very sad day for me. I went for a beach walk and forgot to pick them up after I took a dip in the ocean. Gone somewhere in the sand. I considered posting “LOST” signs around the beach and grocery store. I would have made a killer hand-drawing of them. That’s when I realized I was just being silly. Yes of course there’s more to life than a great pair of sunnies. But my gosh it feels so good to get little fashion finds to cure temporary [sunglass] sadness. Right??

AWAY WITH THE BIRDS

I first met Mellie Tjeong while she was on holiday in Hawaii and got to chat over Piña Colodas and Poke bowls. And boy she sure gets a lot done [creatively] while she’s on vacation!! I remember when I originally started seeing all of these beautiful images of friends popping up on different social media sites and being completely amazed! I was an instant fan.

I love how she can tastefully tie in Hawaii’s otherwise tacky tourist culture [ABC store aloha shirts, fake lei and haku] and turn it into something beautiful. Or use an otherwise typical California hipster style and makes it feel a little more valuable than a fashion photo doing its rounds on tumblr. She really has a sense of place and a personal depth to her photography. Which makes sense because she does a variety of photography including documentary work [something that I think is so key in her fashion photos that sets her work a part from the rest.]

I have to say that one of the bests things about social media is being able to see all of her recent projects! It’s incredibly inspiring to see good, real people pursuing their passion and being so dang good at it!

IN EDUN

Another NYFW gem!

I’m obsessed with Edun’s Spring 2013 collection. I love how designer Sharon Wauchob mixed utilitarian with femininity and used an interesting mix of spring-like layering. I’ve always loved the idea of making a bra or undergarment the center of an outfit [in a very tasteful way of course.] There is such a great unity of color and texture. I am usually intrigued and inspired any time a designer juxtaposes hard and soft.. masculine and feminine. There’s something beautiful about a stiff militia vest and a soft flowing floral top working in harmony.

AT HOME

The best thing about hanging around the house is the ‘clothing optional” rule. After I get home from the beach I actually would prefer to lounge around in the nude. But I have neighbors. So the next best thing to a birthday suit is a bikini. I added my Rolling Stones top into the mix which was a hand-me-down that fit a little too [baby tee] tight for me. So I cut off the sleeves and fashioned some fringe. On this particular day I decided to get fancy and put on some of my turquoise jewels. For a while I had this deep obsession for sterling silver and turquoise. It was the only thing I ever bought up until a couple of years ago. Now I have a healthy amount of jewels to wear for every occasion.. including days spent surfing and lounging around the house.

And this is me. At Home.

NO TOES ON THE NOSE

So I had this idea [while I was surfing] that I was getting better at going to the nose. But I must have really bad vision or too much water is blasting in my eyeballs because.. after seeing these photos I realize that I’m not even on the nose. Not even a little!! I have no explanation for this other than I really need to practice my cross step. And take that extra step.

Just one step short of my happy little toes curling over the edge!

But while I was driving today I heard a commercial on the radio with Donovan Frankenreiter whose Tip of the Day was “the best surfer out there is the surfer having the most fun.” Corny, I know. But it puts a bit of light on the situation. I really appreciate those people who are always smiling and having a good time. In anything and everything. You know? Which kind of makes me think about the entire preface of this blog.. which wasn’t created because I thought I was some amazing surfer [or fashionista or wanderlust for that matter.] It’s just for the love of it all. Whether it’s surfing, fashion, traveling, running around naked, or anything else makes you and me happy. I had a lot of fun surfing over the weekend [with or without my toes in the "right" place.] And that’s all that really matters. Right?? I hope so.

No toes on the nose but I still have happy toes!
