I first met Mellie Tjeong while she was on holiday in Hawaii and got to chat over Piña Colodas and Poke bowls. And boy she sure gets a lot done [creatively] while she’s on vacation!! I remember when I originally started seeing all of these beautiful images of friends popping up on different social media sites and being completely amazed! I was an instant fan.
I love how she can tastefully tie in Hawaii’s otherwise tacky tourist culture [ABC store aloha shirts, fake lei and haku] and turn it into something beautiful. Or use an otherwise typical California hipster style and makes it feel a little more valuable than a fashion photo doing its rounds on tumblr. She really has a sense of place and a personal depth to her photography. Which makes sense because she does a variety of photography including documentary work [something that I think is so key in her fashion photos that sets her work a part from the rest.]
I have to say that one of the bests things about social media is being able to see all of her recent projects! It’s incredibly inspiring to see good, real people pursuing their passion and being so dang good at it!
Away with the birds with Mellie Tjeong!
