My first trip to Montauk wasn't enough. Just one weekend?! That was just a teaser. After an amazing weekend I decided to book another ticket back to New York for the hell of it. I'm actually really glad I did [And I had to show up with a broken arm which could have been a real deal breaker but ended up being a good thing. I think it mellowed me out a bit and didn't go as hard as I could have otherwise.]
And so I spent a couple weeks in Montauk towards the end of August and beginning of September. [Whoa.. Is it really October already??]. But I got to enjoy the quiet of Montauk that makes it so special. After the summer crowd packs up and moves out of their summer share homes. After the weekend party benders. After all the city people toss their Summer 2014 bikini's and start pulling out their sweaters and boots for the fall. After all that summer mayhem. September is Montauk's best kept secret.
The beach parking lots are close to empty. The lineup in the water are usually just a handful of locals [even though I couldn't surf this time around.] There are no waits at my favorite restaurants. And there definitely isn't a gaggle of pretentious, overdressed people walking around town still drunk from the night before. It's peaceful. It feels like its supposed to.. a sleepy little fishing town at the end of Long Island.
I was especially glad I booked another ticket to New York so I had a little more time to catch up with my girlfriends. I actually have no idea if/when I will make it back to Montauk. It is pretty surprising I went this year considering I had given myself a strict "no traveling" rule until the end of this year. But those last several weeks in Montauk were special. I got to catch up with old/new friends and know that I will always have special friendships with people who will be with me the rest of my life.
One more time. It was worth being broke over!
