I recently had a conversation about being a representative of surfing and the surfing lifestyle. A friend of mine just became a brand ambassador for a surf/clothing company but a little embarrassed as she doesn't consider herself a good surfer. I, too, was freshly dubbed a brand ambassador [yes.. more on that in the future!] and had the same doubts.
And that got me thinking.
Clearly there is a reason. I can only speak for myself when I saying I don't consider myself a good surfer either.. by any means. But I have been doing it my entire life. It defines a huge chunk of who I am. And it doesn't really matter if I can have all ten toes curling over the nose on every wave. I mean, it would be really nice and I wouldn't complain, but I just don't have the capacity to do it [yet]. So the fact that one-third of my online presence is surfing makes sense. It is me. And I don't necessarily need to prove my surfing ability to anyone [Thank goodness. I cannot imagine the pressure of being a real athletic,, yikes!] I just hope that I am representing the art and lifestyle of surfing the best way I can.. from my perspective. So who cares if I am good or not. Right?
Now I'm not trying to say I am an amazing ambassador of surfing. No, no. I can only hope I am. I just want to make it clear that I do surfing for love of it. I take photos of surfing for the love of it. It's all for the love of it. And I hope that translates to whoever decides to take a look or have a listen. Because there is real value in that. I think so anyway. We all have to have a creative outlet one way or another! We can all offer a different perspective.
And so it goes. Although some of us may not have the most graceful cross step and maybe a little too giddy when we get nose-perching time.. at least we are just doing us. And that feels just fine.
Thoughts at dusk.
