I am not a Montauk local. Not in the slightest. But I spent a summer working and living at The End and got to see the comings-goings of the New York scene [from a lived-in perspective.] So when Billabong Australia asked me to tag along on their annual trip Out East I did not hesitate to! Montauk? Hell yeah. I will always have a special place in my heart for that place. It contributed to who/where I am today; all the late night partying, crazy log sessions, binge coffee drinking, friendship building, moments of loneliness, and major life decisions included.
One of my favorites parts of being in town are going to the best restaurants, coffee shops, beaches, and bars. Here are a few of my tips to navigate around town:
Start your morning with COFFEE at DURYEA'S. I loved this little zone on Fort Pond and wish it was around when I was living there! It is attached to a well-curated grocer and of course, the restaurant [where you can get an awesome lobster roll and anything lobster for that matter!] Such a great, quiet little zone to enjoy your morning cuppa. I also LOVE taking a short drive to JACK'S in Amagansett for strong espresso and an everything bagel with cream cheese! It was my favorite place to go when I was lived there.
After morning coffee, grab a bike and head down to the beach! I usually like to post up at DITCH PLAINS or ATLANTIC TERRACE. Both are great places to post up all day or get ten toes over in on a couple of waves! Don't forget to grab a drink and snack at the DITCH WITCH too! TIP: You need to be a resident [with a parking permit] to park in the beach parking lots. If you decide to take a car you need to find parking in the neighbor and avoid "No Parking" zones. So unless you're rolling with a local it's better to break a sweat and take a bike!
Ready for lunch? There are tons of great places to re-energize. I love stopping at JONI'S for a tasty sandwich or NATURALLY GOOD for a good vegetarian meal. But while I was hanging out with Elle we frequented HAPPY BOWLS for acai bowls and the new TACOMBI for some of the yummiest guac and tacos around!
And what to do after lunch? Back to the beach for a little more sun.. of course!
One place I never got a chance to visit while I lived [and visited in the past] is GURNEY'S [a super fancy little hotel zone on the beach]. But Billabong held a fun little event and we got to feel fancy with a ton of yum snacks and drinks in our own personal cabanas [surf lessons with the World Champ included!]
What next? Sunset cocktails! I love going to the BEACH BAR at CROW'S NEST or NAVY BEACH for pupu's and yummy cocktails on the water.
There are so many great places to have dinner in Montauk that I can't just name a few. I am going to list all of my favorites and you can decide what fits your palette for any particular night HARVEST for family style and huge portions (I LOVE there bread and Pan Seared Ahi). CROW'S NEST for a delicious Mediterranean menu and lively atmosphere. CLAM AND CHOWDER HOUSE AT SALIVAR'S for the most fresh sashimi and sushi, and SWALLOW EAST for my favorite lobster roll and reggae on Sundays!
And once your bellies are full I am sure you want to dance it off! Montauk is known for it's party scene and most of restaurants turn into their own little scene. But if you really want to experience the quintessential party scene you need to stop at THE SURF LODGE and RUSCHMEYERS. My friends have described their experience as "summer camp for adults" and I thought it was very appropriate to note! Haha.
And that's all she wrote. Montauk through a my eyes with Billabong's help! Please feel free to comment with any additional tips or questions you might have if you want to visit Montauk! Special and warmest Mahalo to Cayleh from Billabong Australia for inviting me and making it extra special!
