BAGGY WITH WRINKLES

I have been crazy busy for the last week and finally found a bit of time to post one of my last [documented] outfits in Arizona. It was one of those random outfits that I just threw together and somehow worked for me. I think mixing prints [especially animal print] is somewhat of a special art. I have a friend who is really good at it. I am not so good and it usually happens by mistake. But most personal styling mistakes work in my favor. Even if I never press out my wrinkled pants and wear completely unflattering fits. That’s just how I roll sometimes.

Baggy and a little wrinkled but I don’t care!

IN THE DESERT

Believe it or not I am a bit sad. Not because I am leaving the heat or the cacti. Although I really love me a good cactus [but not so much the dry heat.] It is always a somber feeling to leave people you love. Especially since I will be spending an entire summer away from any close family or friends.

I had such an awesome time though. We embarked on so many little adventures. Stayed up late, went to great coffee shops, ate at a few yummy eateries, did a lot of driving, saw the Grand Canyon, watched [my first] professional baseball game, ventured out on a few desert hikes, watched some of the most beautiful sunsets, and spent a lot of quality time together. They were days well spent and totally worth being dry and oceanless for a while.

A good time in the desert with family.

A GRAND ADVENTURE

a-grand-adventure-1a-grand-adventure-2a-grand-adventure-3a-grand-adventure-4a-grand-adventure-5a-grand-adventure-6a-grand-adventure-7a-grand-adventure-8a-grand-adventure-9It’s summer time and you know what that means?! Summer family vacation [minus a couple members of the family]!! I’m drying out my gills for a short while and spending some time in the Arizona deserts with family. We just drove [a lot] and spent the weekend at The Grand Canyon National Park. Pretty epic. And it made me think.. we live in such a beautiful creation with some of the most breathtaking landscape. I’m convinced The Grand Canyon was a mistake.. and even natures mistakes are pretty incredible.

We couldn’t do any of the major hikes even though I would have liked to. But we did get a chance to hike a bit of the Rim Trail and Bright Angel trail.. just enough to get a glimpse into the canyon. We also came across a few hikers who actually battled the switchback and the heat firsthand. All 11 miles of it. But the small adventures we had in the park were nice little samplers of one of the greatest wonders in the world. 277 miles long, up to 18 miles wide, and over a mile deep. I would definitely like to go back and brave those unit measurements in the near future.

But for now I’ll be enjoying the next few days among the cactus and dry heat of southern Arizona before I head to New York for an ultimate summer adventure. It just keeps getting better. Hope you enjoy a little glimpse of our Grand Canyon adventure until then!

A grand adventure at The Grand Canyon.

A DESERT COOL

(Top: Samudra, Jeans: MM6 by Martin Margiela, Flats: Cynthia Vincent)

Being in the desert ain’t so bad. I kind of like it. Hot days, chilly nights. Beautiful sunsets, starry skies. Long stretches of sand, different shades of brown. It’s got everything expect for the ocean. It’s a nice change of pace. There’s something very beautiful about the desert. I found myself staring out into the vast endlessness of cacti and sand wondering how and why people decided to settle in such an otherwise desolate place. In some ways, I feel like the culture is so much more vibrant here to make up for a lack of scenery. You know? I’m just stoked that I don’t have to wear a coat at the end of November!!

Just keepin’ my cool in the desert heat.

AWAY, ON THE ROAD

(Top: T by Alexander Wang, Shorts: 7 For All Mankind, Flats: Cynthia Vincent)

Got to hop off the island for the long Thanksgiving weekend and hit the desert road. I shoved a pair of shorts in my luggage right before I left for the airport and so glad I did! I guess it never occurred to me that the desert is an exception to the seasonal rule. I’m loving that I don’t need to wear a coat!! I’m down south enough that it doesn’t really call for it. Hello, me… Drrr.

So I decided I like spending the holidays away from home. It makes it really feel like a vacation. It’s so nice feeling like you have absolutely nothing to do. It’ll make it hard to go back to some responsibility. Eeek! But for now, I’m going to enjoy some nice canyon hikes, attempt to do some rock climbing, and keep driving down that dusty travel road!!

Gonna keep roooollin’!!
