LAZY SATURDAYS

lazy-saturdays-1lazy-saturdays-2lazy-saturdays-3lazy-saturdays-4lazy-saturdays-5lazy-saturdays-6lazy-saturdays-7lazy-saturdays-8lazy-saturdays-9Life has been pretty lazy over the last couple weeks. I am on the Big Island escaping from reality and trying to do as little as possible. And find it pretty guilt-free because it is somewhat of a transitional period for me. In a couple of weeks I will be on the other side of the country spending my summer outside of the pacific ocean!! And hopefully spending a lot of time in the Atlantic. Temperature willing. Super excited about it actually. But whew.. more on that later.

So a couple of friends and I decided to drive to the other side of the island for some snorkeling and lounging at one of our favorite beaches.. 69′s. But don’t let the name fool you. It is actually named after the mile marker it falls on.. not that other 69. Whatever that means.

We even made a couple of stops off in Waimea.. including the farmers market, thrift store, and “Puppies for Sale.” Which really made me think long and hard about potentially living in that area. It is so beautiful. Misty green hills, quaint plantation homes, and that good ol’ ranching vibe. The Big Island is such a unique, diverse place. It’s pretty incredible. They’re not lying when they called this island big. You could easily choose to be between white sand beaches, rolling green hills and horse covered pastures, long stretches of lava, active flowing rivers of molten lava, snowy mountain tops, dramatic valleys, sweeping waterfalls, black sand beaches, rain forests, and dry desolate deserts. All in one day [if you tried really hard]. It’s hard to beat and the perfect place to be on hiatus.

Just another lazy saturday on the Big Island.

LIFE IS GINGER

life-is-ginger-1life-is-ginger-2life-is-ginger-3life-is-ginger-4life-is-ginger-5(Photos by: Brooklyn Hawaii + me)

Life has been pretty quiet around here lately. With the knee still in recovery and a hiatus from any kind of  fashion spending its hard to keep up when there’s nothing to keep up with! And.. I lost my eyeglasses. I cannot see a thing [and it took a lot out of me to fashion this post alone.] So I’ve been spending a lot of time lounging in the sand.. figuring out ways to stay motivated and productive. New specs would help a lot.

I also haven’t been in the photo snapping mood lately. But isn’t it crazy how one little flower can change everything?? I think it would probably be pretty redundant for me to constantly keep updates on.. lounging on the beach. Wah wah. But one fell swoop with my gardening shears and a trip to the beach spiced it up a bit. Don’t you think?? I’ve been pretty fascinated with ginger spears lately.. I even started conducted minor research on the flower. Such an interesting simulation in my life right now. Did you know red ginger symbolizes passion and strength?? I’m exploring this.

Anyway.. I just wanted to make sure you all knew I was still here! Breathing, existing, living! I have a couple of really exciting things coming up and am looking forward to sharing it with you all. In the meantime I will be staring at grains of sand and looking forward to the day I can be sliding and creating again!!

Life is still pretty ginger.

SAMUDRA x LADYSLIDER

(Photos by: me)

Oh hey look!! Samudra x Ladyslider pouches! Imagine that!

This is exciting. I got to team up with the lifestyle brand Samudra and design a few of my very own [iconic] pouches. This is one of the few projects I’ve been working on over the last several months and can finally share it with you all!! All three photos on each pouch was taken by me from around the islands and on my travels. The perfect combination of fashion, waves, and travel.

City of Lights- The Effiel Tower illuminated on a warm summer night.

Cold Coconut- A refreshing roadside treat.

Kaimana Palms- Beach palms on a tropical afternoon in Waikiki.

You can purchase your pouches at my new SHOP now!  Yes yes, a shop! An exclusive ladyslider shopping experience.. if you will. Haha. It will be a place where all my creative energy and all my favorite things can be purchased! I wanted to wait a little longer until I had all my other goodies and projects ready but I couldn’t wait! Stick around because more things will be added soon! Cool things, I promise.

A Samudra x Ladyslider collaboration. I’m excited!

WEEKDAY SLIDING

(Photos by: Brooklyn Hawaii)

In between those big winter swells is our chance to shine. Hah. Kind of. It really is the only opportunity for us to get our aunty buns wet without losing them. Monday was one of those days. We posted up all day at the beach and did some major sliding. 3 times to be exact. I felt like I was 12 years old again. Except I voluntarily stayed at the beach all day instead of getting drop off at 6:30am [picked up at 6:30pm] and hacking up coconuts to survive.

I was really surprised all how much it didn’t feel like winter. Unlike the other cloudy/rainy days.. the skies opened up and the sun was out. And there was virtually no one else in the water. Surprisingly. This time of year most of your waves are spent dodging people and getting dropped in on. But I’m not complaining. I wish every monday could be that good!

Weekday sliding with the girls.

OLD SUITS ME

(Photos by: Virgi P.)(Swimsuit: Milly, Shorts: 7 For All Mankind, Sunglasses: Karen Walker, Flower Crown: DIY!)

I know it could seem incredibly redundant to share photos of the same sunglasses and DIY flower crown within a couple days of each other but I couldn’t help myself! We decided to go on a little beach excursion [that involved some form of work mind you] and I decided to throw on my Milly one-piece swimsuit. Last minute I put the crown on my head and slipped my sunnies over my eyes as I headed out the door. Suddenly, everything I was wearing felt brand new. I had randomly put together a little beach going outfit that suited me just fine!

So, I have had this Milly suit for years. Years. I can still remember standing in the store deciding whether I should buy it or not. I was on a very tight budget in college and a purchase like that was tremendous! Maybe that’s why it is so valuable to me. I’m sure any other person would have gotten rid of it by now. But I have this thing about holding onto bikini’s and swimsuits until they haven’t any stretch left in them. This suit has stood the test of fashion time. It has gone in and out of trend numerous times. But who cares, right?? I will love it forever and probably make a pillow out of it once it loses all its elasticity. From my college days making irrational fashion purchases to days spent lounging on the beach.. no matter how old it will always be that one-piece swimsuit.

And so I guess the old suits me just fine.

BEACH OUT

(Photos from: here)

Okay. Let’s get real for a second. Beach + Fashion. Right up my alley. I’ll take one of everything.. especially if it says Isabel Marant on the label. And that hand-embroidered, patchwork vest. Is it Chanel?? Okay Thanks.

I love when summer time rolls around and so do magazines filled with beached out, bleached out, and sun out fashion, clothing, editorials, the works. It’s when I get the most inspired and pumped up. Pumped for the place that I live, the profession I am in. What a dreamer.

I promise if I ever get a hold of that vest I will wear it to the beach and get beached out in the sun. Promise.

SAME BOOTS, DIFFERENT DAY

FIRST DAY BOOT DAY. (Photos by: BD. Top: J.Crew, Shorts: Current/Elliot)

THE BOOTS. (H by Hudson.)

SECOND DAY BOOT DAY. (Photos by: TR. Top: Free People, Necklace: Dezso By Sara Beltran.)

I just got these bad boy boots in the mail and my feet are glued. I wore them all weekend. All weekend. Surprisingly I didn’t wear them in the water on accident. I originally got them for my trip to New York but have found them very useful to slip on and run around town (or the beach) in.

With that.. I think it’s really hard to find a balance between the cold and the warm fashion choices when you live in such a warm/humid (and I mean humid) place. I only know a very few girls who can pull off the winter look in Hawaii. I don’t know how they prevent profuse sweating under all those layers. But I struggle all the time with being “stylish” or “fashionable” because it is so easy to dress without effort here (and I don’t mean effortless style.. I’m talking about wearing your pajamas and other misc. items that just don’t make you feel good when you wear it). And so there is a struggle to maintain that “fashion” vibe when I’m trying to blog. It’s always refreshing to buy something new that can be worn repeatedly without feeling like you’re coping out. And it’s season appropriate.

In a nut shell: it is hard to be maintain fashion in a place where all you want to do is wear your bikini and pereu. But when you do find that one thing that you never want to take off.. wear it thin and wear it often. Because no matter where you are, who you are, and how “fashionable” you are.. it doesn’t matter unless it’s you. So who cares if you wear it as many times as there are days in the week! Just make sure you wash it and it doesn’t stink.

*Note: I don’t speak of “style” or “fashion” in a marketable sense, but for my own satisfaction of feeling confident and.. good.. with whatever I am wearing. It’s a personal thing.

And so, same boots different day everyday.

ROAM HAWAII x HIPSTAMATIC

(Photos by: me & she; Swimsuit: Bantu, Skirt: F21, Sunglasses: Chloé, Headband: Nordstrom)

If you frequent Oahu’s North Shore or have only been there a couple times you’ve probably seen the Roam Hawaii girls.. [for a lack of a better term] roaming around. Oh you know, they only have a TIGER for a vehicle. They’ve got this awesome lifestyle-concept-mobile-store offering unique, one-of-a-kind clothing, accessories, jewelry, and the like. The artwork on their truck is even one-of-a-kind for goodness sakes!

I got a chance to tag along with them for a little surf safari adventure to one of the only spots on the north shore that were longboard-lady-sliding friendly [the swells are still rolling in for the winter season!!] Puena Point. We were able to shoot a couple of photos using our nifty Hipstamatic apps throughout our adventure. They’ve got such a unique quality, no? I’m snap happy on mine for sure!

If you can’t find them roaming [again, lack of a better term!!], wave sliding, or at the local fleas, you can also find their shop on Etsy. Check out my favorite: tees screen-printed in Hawaii!!

Looking forward to my next invite on the tiger-mobile already!

DESTINATION BEACH

(Top: Surf Bazaar, Shorts: 7 for all mankind, Sunglasses: Chloé, Jewelry: Hinu)

Even though the weather is chilly and wet it is always worth a try at the beach. You know? I don’t know what else to do on the weekends anyway?! Strong trade winds, showers pending, peek-a-boo sun, on again off again. The weather was teasing us all weekend. It really makes me appreciate those rare winter days with dead winds and sunny skies.. especially at night when the air is still and the moon is full. When will we ever get those this winter?! I still appreciate my time at the beach though. Digging my toes into the wet sand, watching people try to battle the wind-blasted waves, running across the beach to “get the shot” of a random rainbow, snacking on deeeeelicious spicy edamame and coco water, good conversation with friends. You can’t really complain.

Rain or shine the weekends are meant to be spent at the beach. In Hawaii anyway.

WINTER PARADISE

(Photos from: here)

I saw these photos on a blog that I follow regularly (originally from Tatler’s December issue) and instantly felt like I could relate. Is it just me or has it been mighty blistery on the islands lately?? Windy, rainy, hairy weather. And the sun goes down so dang early!! I seem to forget this every year around winter time and even I make the mistake that Hawaii is supposed to be summer all year long. Clearly there are seasons here. If I have to whip out a sweater to go outside and am shivering while I’m surfing (even with a wetsuit on!!) winter is definitely upon us. I’m actually considering buying winter-esque clothes. I’m a little shocked, although I do need to prepare for New York in February. EEEKKK!

But really, doesn’t a fur coat seem so appropriate for winter in paradise??
