THE TRAVELING SWEATER

the-traveling-sweater-1the-traveling-sweater-2the-traveling-sweater-5the-traveling-sweater-3the-traveling-sweater-4the-traveling-sweater-6(Sweater: Quiksilver Women, Jeans: Zara, Rings: Hinu Jewelry x Ladyslider exclusive, Sunglasses: Dior, Booties: Vintage)

juuust got the  Quiksilver “doodoo” Traveling Sweater in the mail and it couldn’t be better timing! I tried it on for size yesterday and am excited to take it on my expedition to Australia. Yesssss! I’m going to Australia! I am sitting in the airport as we speak! It has been my dream to go for years. For years! And I’m finally doing it. I’m doing it. I’m a stressed out wreck right now but as soon as I am sitting on the plane I’m hoping for smooth sailing.. and a cocktail.

HAWAII >>> AUSTRALIA.

I have grand plans for this sweater and all the other goodies that serendipitously came together in this particular outfit. More specifically: my “travel rings” that represent the same lifestyle. I got to work with Hinu Jewelry on these exclusive rings for sale at my pop-up at SpecialME [I will be posting more detailed photos of the whole ordeal soon.] The whole idea is to wear all the places you have been to on your dainty little traveling fingers.. and you can add “Hawaii” or “Haleiwa” if you stop by the shop. I thought it was a neat concept. Isn’t it a neat concept?? I’m hoping to be covered in travel rings by the end of this year. We’ll see.

But the sweater. This little “doodoo” number is going to go on the trip of it’s life! I have very little planned and hoping that everything will fall into place. That’s the best part of a trip.. the unexpected. Let’s hope this sweater and I don’t get stranded at the airport down under in a couple of hours. Eeeeeeek!! I’ll try to keep you all posted as much as possible!! SO excited!

The traveling sweater is going places!! See you guys down under!

BAIT AND BOOTS

bait-boots-1bait-boots-2bait-boots-3bait-boots-4bait-boots-5(Tee: Zara, Shorts: True Religion, Bracelet: Curren Bell Jewelry, Boots: Isabel Marant)

Here’s the skinny:

The shark tee. I recently purchased this particular article of clothing via Zara Online and haven’t taken it off. I’ve been living in it. It is so unbelievably comfortable. I cannot quite figure out how they made it so vintage soft. Like it has already been worn for 20 years. Minus the pit stains and dead skin cells. And there’s a shark on it. A shark. Its been the [second] best purchase I’ve made this year.

The bracelet. The absolute perfect balance between chic and cool. I’m not usually a fan of skulls but the way [Curren] mixes the labradorite with the naturally carved stone.. it totally works. I love the way the stone shines different shades of blues at different angles. The stone itself is so elegant you wouldn’t think it would qualify as an everyday wearing type of bracelet. But it is the perfect blend of everyday elegance. I’m trying to find outfits to match the bracelet. Not the other way around!

And the boots. The best purchase I have made this year. Do you remember those Isabel Marant boots I have been obsessing about?? Well.. lo and behold I own um! I own ummm! And I didn’t pay full price.. of course. I got them for a steal. A major steal. I can thank Ebay for that. And the girl with the oversized feet who couldn’t wear them anymore. Yes, they are used.. or should I say gently worn. But when I got them in the mail they were practically new you could lick a raisin off the leather toes. I just happened to add some red dirt [character] the first time I wore them. Just for that extra edge [just kidding it was an accident.] But I am so smitten on these bad boys.

Outfit of the moment: Shark bait, stones & skulls, and those dream boots.

THE OPENING

the-opening-1the-opening-8the-opening-2the-opening-3the-opening-4the-opening-5the-opening-6the-opening-7the-opening-9(Photos: Various, but mostly by my mom)

The whirlwind is finally done and opening night is over! I had a great night serving friends Pogmosa’s and talking to Japanese magazine/press peeps in code [I really need to learn Nihongo.] It has been a crazy last couple of days. I was almost sure it wasn’t going to come together. But it did. Oh my gosh, it did!

The biggest disappointment of the night: my lack of attention to photo-taking. It must have been from the lack of sleep and excitement of other bodies in the building [people actually came!] But I wish I had spent a little more time watching people, taking photos, and capturing moments. I really wanted to show you folks the process, the details, the stress, the blood, the breakdown moments, the snack table, the excitement, etc. I even brought my Fuji Instax to capture moments. I should have snapped a photo of a photo. There were some good ones. Bah. I wish I could have showed it all to you! At least my mom got in on some of the action!

If you didn’t get a chance to check it out on opening night it will still be there for a whole two and a half months. That gives you a lot of time to take a look. No excuses.

The opening night of Ladyslider for SpecialME. A success I think!

COLD WEATHER SWEATER

cold-weather-sweater-1cold-weather-sweater-2

(Leather Jacket: BCBG, Wolf Sweater: Souvenir  from Alaska, Jeans: Zara, Shoes: Minnetonka, Clutch: Madewell)

The last week and couple of days have been very hectic for me. I have been running around Orange – San Diego – LA [and soon to be Mexico] like a chicken with its head cut off. I have so much to do in preparation for my very first “installation” [more explanation on that later!!!] I haven’t even had time to sit down on my computer for some legitimate social media and blogging therapy. But I promise you there will a plethora of photos and adventures to report back about.

So, since I got to California I have been freezing. Freezing. Okay, I am slightly exaggerating but I do not have a legitimate winter wardrobe. And this is a problem. I basically have to layer as much as I can and I usually end up looking like a hobo. My wolf sweater doesn’t help. But it is honestly one of the only articles of clothing I own that battle against the nippy air. It has saved my life for the last couple days. And you cannot imagine how relatable I’ve become. A little quirky sweater is a great conversation starter. It’s amazing what a little wolf can to for your social life.. and an ill-prepared body.

My wolf.. my cold weather sweater. Life saver.

MUTHER OF ALL WETSUITS

I’m in California! And I have been for the last week. Which has a lot to do with the reason why I have been a tad bit absent. So many places to go, things to do, and food to eat. I will give you a nifty little California travel dairy when I’ve collected the photos over the last week. But since I’ve been here all I have been thinking about are wetsuits [among other things]. The air is cold and the water is freezing. What I could do for a good [and fashionably sensitive] wetsuit. And there’s one particular company that knows whats up.

MOAT. I love Muther Of All Things. I’ve probably expressed this enough in recent history. It’s hard to find a decent wetsuit that accommodates surf functionality and fashion sensibility. I’m just saying.. sometimes us girls don’t want to be decked out in an all-black, masculine seal suit. And the girls at MOAT know this. Color print leggings, a subtle cutout here, contrasting fabric there, and surf jackets w/ princesslines in all the right places. That’ll make any girl wanna jump [fashionably] in to frigid cold waters.

Muther Of All Things.. Muther Of All Wetsuits.

SIMPLY SAMUDRA

simply-samudra-1simply-samudra-2simply-samudra-3(Photos by: Jennifer Binney)

I had the opportunity to play “model” the other day for Samudra. It was more like being at the right place at the right time. I’m not really sure you can consider me a model. Good thing I always carry a bikini in my trunk or it wouldn’t have worked out!! Had I know I was going to be posing I would have bleached my mustache. Not that it matters because in every other photo I put on the worldwide web my stache can be read loud and clear. Hahhh. But its more about the bag/tote presentation then my unwanted hair anyway.

Personally, I’ll take one in every print and color. There is something about those Samudra clutches and bags that dress up any outfit. Statement pieces. Makes you feel tropical and fancy.

It’s simply Samudra.

THE PERFECT MIX

I think I just found my new favorite brand; Maison Scotch. When my eyes first set it’s gaze on the Spring 2013 collection I was nearly out of breath. I got so excited. And I may have gotten a little narcissistic too. I was pretty convinced they had designed the entire collection based off of my fashion wants and needs.. they did it all for me. Hahah. The entire collection is a perfect mix of prints, colors, and light weight coolness. And mini pom poms. Pom poms!! [I hope they never go out of style!!] It’s an exceptionally curated ensemble of cloth for traveling, walking, breathing and looking effortlessly cool.. like you just rolled out of bed and still look fabulous.

I love that look.

I really, really love clothes that make you look effortless. Of course effortless is less than effortless. You still with me?? I think it takes very trained eye to appear unfazed by the the act of dressing yourself but still remain fashionably fluent. Cool, chic style. This is something I will probably work my entire fashion/style life to attain. It would help if my entire wardrobe was Maison Scotch or Isabel Marant of course.

But really.. Mansion Scotch is the perfect fashion mix.

SHOES SHOES SHOES

1-margiela-tabi-boots2-isabel-marant-betty-sneakers4-beatrice-venezuela-chino5-isabel-marant-jenny-boots(Margiela Tabi boots from here, Isabel Marant Betty Sneakers from here, Beatrice Valenzuela Chinos from here, Isabel Marant Jenny Boots from here)

I have been pretty shoe-obsessed lately. There are so many boots, booties, sandals, heels, sneakers, etc. etc. that I want. And I want them bad. As we speak.. I am trying to convince responsible-me that life is too short  to care and all I really need are heaps of cute shoes. Ahhh, if only it were that simple.

Now, these particular shoes were not picked at random. I have been wanting every single one of these pairs for a very long time. And shoe loathing is like a bad habit.. sometimes it’s manageable and you can [somewhat] keep your mind off it but it never goes away until you get it.

I might need to splurge. Spend my future child’s college tuition on a great pair of Isabel Marant sneakers or those Margiela Tabi’s I keep hoping someone got tired of and put them on Ebay for a steal. But maybe I’ll just get them brand new and thank my future child for choosing to continue his/her education at the local community college. Ugh, the things we do for fashion.

Shoes shoes shoes. I need you shoes.

A SAD ENDING

a-sad-ending-1a-sad-ending-2a-sad-ending-3a-sad-ending-4(Photos: Brooklyn Hawaii) (Beanie: a Surplus store, Jacket: Gap, Tee: James Perse, Boots: Loeffler Randall)

I’m not usually very political but I recently heard some disturbing news about our quaint [and historic] Haleiwa town. I had caught wind of the development a few months ago but ever since the construction and demolition lines have gone up.. reality has snuck in. Aoki’s Shave Ice and ‘Iwa’s Gallery will be coming down and brand new commercial building will be going up. It’s a sad day and coming years for Haleiwa town.

So I decided to do some research on the matter and it seems that most people in the area are in support of the Haleiwa Commercial Redevelopment Project. Rightfully so. We’re all trying to earn a living and make a couple bucks, right? And I guess that’s the price we have to pay for modern business. We don’t want Haleiwa to become obsolete.. so let’s build more, let corporate business come in, and commercialize everything. We all have to give in to the beast and are hanging in the balance between keeping our heritage and “keeping up.” It’s true in so many ways, with so many things nowadays.

But I digress.

My friend and I did the only thing we felt we could do.. take photos of the building exactly as it was. Because one day it will never be there again. And we wanted to capture her in its vulnerable moment and will forever remember her [and her delicious rainbow shave ice. hehe.] It seemed appropriate to be rainy and stormy that day. I wore appropriate attire for the mourning of these two historic [soon to be forgotten] buildings.

A sad ending to a beautiful thing. Long live Aoki’s!

SIDE TO SIDE

side-to-side-1side-to-side-2(Photos by: Brooklyn Hawaii) (Chambray Jacket: Madewell, Top: Quiksilver Women, Pants: Solow via Olive Boutique, Clutch: Madewell, Sandals: Ash)

This morning I had grand plans to be productive and get work done. But when a couple of friends suggested a trip to the other side [east] of the island for a mini adventure.. I couldn’t say no. We made all the appropriate stops along the way including the Hawaiian delight Waihole Poi Factory for lunch. Mmmm mm mmmm. Hawaiian delight for sure. We also went straight into the belly of the beast [Kailua] and stopped at other boutiques and essential shopping spots you would never find on the North Shore.

As luck would have it.. I wore my new linen pants to same shop that I had bought a couple weeks prior. Is that fashion suicide?? I’m not sure. Luckily, I didn’t find myself in an awkward fashion moment.. standing next to the rack with all the other pants. But my pants probably have a tint of brown already you wouldn’t have even noticed. I have worn those bad boy so many times already I hardly think they should be called new. I’m using the term loosely. And they may have been picked out of the hamper a couple times when I wasn’t sure what else to wear. I really really love linen. I wish I could constantly clothe myself in it. When I wear linen I feel like I am a tiny bit more refined [minus wearing them multiple times in one week.] And I might own a yacht too.

But I digress. It ended up being a nice little trip around the island and just another reason to appreciate this island life. Great food, good shopping, hanging with friends. It was a well spend day on the other side.

Mini road trip from the [north] side to the [east] side.
