ON THE ROAD

(Photos from: here)

I’m in Oregon for a couple weeks and looking forward to getting layered up!

But ever since I woke up this morning I have been on the quest for trendy, cozy clothing. I don’t know if it’s because of last nights Halloween festivities leaving me spent or my inexperience with cold-weather fashion but I woke up this morning with a real [style] problem. I got dressed in a bit of a hurry and when I looked down at myself I was incredibly disappointed. I cannot really explain it other than saying blah. Just blah.

So I got this hunkering feeling that I need to do some shopping. Chunky sweaters, denim overalls, thick scarves. I really think I need to master the art of layering too. Now that I’m out and about [in this chilly weather] a little bit of an adjustment needs to be made! I’m not in Kansas anymore. You’d think I’d have it down after having travelled here often for the past couple years! Nonetheless, I thought Free People’s latest looks for fall was the perfect inspiration. I’m taking mental notes. I think I can turn these blah, frumpy days around into the perfect style getaway!!

Streaming my inner fall.. on the road.

HOTEL LOUNGEWEAR

(Top: Free People, Pants: Anokhi, Jewelry: Various finds, gifts, etc.)

I decided I might not be a fashionable person. At all. I’m sure this is already obvious to most people. But more times than not I will dress for comfort more than a fashion statement. I’ll opt for a drop-crotch pant over skin-tight jeans any day. And forget high heels.. where are my flats? I’m probably one pair of shoes shy from being a hippie. Somebody get me a pair of Birkenstocks already!!

So why do I even have fashion section to my blog at all?? Hah! Who knows. But let me tell you.. I get a good run out of all my clothes. All of them. I had this realization today while I was wearing a basic white t-shirt. I will wear on a regular basis [even out to dinner or a night on the town] and out in the water surfing. And My drop-crotch Anokhi pants acted as pajamas and my outfit out to dinner [on my weekend getaway.]

I’m not really sure if I’m fashionable or if any one actually identifies with me as a fashion-know kinda girl. But I’ve decided living in loungewear is my thing. And who cares if that isn’t fashion??

Hotel loungewear is my wear.

ENDLESS SUMMER

(Photos from: here)

When I saw the first photos of this little Waikiki photo shoot from Daeja Fallas herself [via Instagram] I couldn’t help feeling like I was in intermediate school again. I felt the same exact way I did when I decided to start surfing. I was completely inspired by Roxy’s ad campaigns and wanted to wear a hula skirt at the very birthplace of surfing. I totally bought into that whole lifestyle. I would be lying if I told you I didn’t feel the same way right now. Here I am feeling like a 12 year old girl.. ready to buy a $75 beater surfboard  and brave the whitewash. I might even have to go to Queens tomorrow for good measure. But we’ll see.

I love seeing images like this. It even makes me a little envious and a part of me wishes I was there with a lei around my neck too! Which means the photographs were depicted perfectly. Rightfully so. I recommend checking out the rest of DF’s photographs. She’s an amazing photographer with a unique [but relatable] point of view.

For those of you dreaming of an endless summer in Waikiki.. find it here.

FREE PEOPLE IN VIETNAM

(Free People March Lookbook photos from: here)

I was blown away by Free People’s March lookbook when I first saw it last month. It definitely reconfirmed my dreams of traveling all throughout Asia on an epic excursion. I really want to go to Vietnam. Why is Free People so ridiculously good at projecting a lifestyle I want so terribly?? I’m not completely starry-eyed though. I know my trip won’t look as fabulous as this. It’ll come with some bumps and bruises.. and loss of money. But I am prepared.

For now, I can dream of looking fabulous and decked out in highly colorful and embroidered hippie attire while traveling to faraway destinations. You folks will be the first to know when it actually happens (well, maybe not first. My parents and sisters will probably hear about it first.)

Feeling free to be where ever I want, when ever I want. Esp. Vietnam.

SAME BOOTS, DIFFERENT DAY

FIRST DAY BOOT DAY. (Photos by: BD. Top: J.Crew, Shorts: Current/Elliot)

THE BOOTS. (H by Hudson.)

SECOND DAY BOOT DAY. (Photos by: TR. Top: Free People, Necklace: Dezso By Sara Beltran.)

I just got these bad boy boots in the mail and my feet are glued. I wore them all weekend. All weekend. Surprisingly I didn’t wear them in the water on accident. I originally got them for my trip to New York but have found them very useful to slip on and run around town (or the beach) in.

With that.. I think it’s really hard to find a balance between the cold and the warm fashion choices when you live in such a warm/humid (and I mean humid) place. I only know a very few girls who can pull off the winter look in Hawaii. I don’t know how they prevent profuse sweating under all those layers. But I struggle all the time with being “stylish” or “fashionable” because it is so easy to dress without effort here (and I don’t mean effortless style.. I’m talking about wearing your pajamas and other misc. items that just don’t make you feel good when you wear it). And so there is a struggle to maintain that “fashion” vibe when I’m trying to blog. It’s always refreshing to buy something new that can be worn repeatedly without feeling like you’re coping out. And it’s season appropriate.

In a nut shell: it is hard to be maintain fashion in a place where all you want to do is wear your bikini and pereu. But when you do find that one thing that you never want to take off.. wear it thin and wear it often. Because no matter where you are, who you are, and how “fashionable” you are.. it doesn’t matter unless it’s you. So who cares if you wear it as many times as there are days in the week! Just make sure you wash it and it doesn’t stink.

*Note: I don’t speak of “style” or “fashion” in a marketable sense, but for my own satisfaction of feeling confident and.. good.. with whatever I am wearing. It’s a personal thing.

And so, same boots different day everyday.

FREE IN JANUARY

(Photos from: here)

Feeling inspired by the LA section of Free People’s latest catalog (January). The colors and the mood really encompass that wandering, stylish, surf/skate lifestyle. It’s the kind of clothes that can take you from miles on the road to days on the beach. And maybe a couple of city strolls. You never know.

But there’s something about catalog shopping that really gives me a sense of nostalgia. When I was 12 years old I used to flip through the pages of Delia*s (remember how they put a little Astrix instead on an apostrophe?? Trés chic for a little tween on a budget!!) wanting to live the same feeling the pages evoked. I even called in and made an order a couple of times!! Nothing will ever replace catalog-in-the-mail feeling. Not even internet window shopping.

Ohhh.. it’s time to feel wild and free for all of January!
