BUMBLE AND BUMBLE

bumble-bumbleI was so excited when I got a package in the mail with “Bumble and Bumble” written all over it. Inside?? All kinds of goodies my hair will thank me for.. like the new Surf Shampoo, Conditioner, and Spray. It’s especially nice now that I am leaving the islands for a while and won’t have the same beached out hair that I’m used to. It’ll be quite pleasing to my hair follicles when I am in the middle of the Arizonian desert and still feel like I just finished a fun surf session with friends. I’m really excited to try it out and see how it does with my hair! I’ll be sure to let you know.

This is also a great introductory into exploring [surf, travel, and fashion] beauty. I never was much for beauty and hair products but as I get older I am really starting to see the value in taking care of my body. Especially now that my skin and hair has really taken a toll from the sun. Bumble and Bumble is a great way to start my beauty exploration. Cannot wait to snap off the top and let my hair strands soak in all it’s goodness.

A Bumble and Bumble surf experience. [Thanks Connie and Melissa!]

THAT SPECIAL PLACE

Iʻve talked about this place before. Itʻs one of those places that surpasses any exotic location I have ever traveled to. Itʻs one of those only places I will wake up before the sun for. Itʻs one of those places I will probably have my ashes spread after I die. Itʻs one of those special places. Waipiʻo Valley.

On this particular Sunday morning the sky was overcast and the river was running hard. My friend and I may have made a couple attempts to cross it and failed terribly. Rightfully so. It is probably the most swollen Iʻve seen it. A bit embarrassing but thankfully neither of us drown. Regardless if it is raining or the sun is shining bright.. it is still one of the most breathtaking places. Misty mornings, deep gouging valley, dark black sand beaches, glassy dumping waves. It is definitely a magical place. And a humbling place as well. I opted to swim out to the lineup to avoid any further blunders in the river and enjoyed getting a small pounding by the waves. It was so nice to be out in the water and watch the waves roll through [without any attempt at catching it or getting caught on the inside with a board.] Just as is. Just being. It was the best way to end my Hilo hiatus.

I was in that special place.

SUNSET SESSIONS

sunset-sessions-1sunset-sessions-2sunset-sessions-3sunset-sessions-4sunset-sessions-6
Just going through the last of my Hilo hiatus photos from this past weekend. Super stoked that we got to go up to the Mauna Kea summit for sunset. Itʻs one of those treks I always wanted to go on but never found the time over the last couple years. It was exceptionally challenging going up without a 4-wheel drive. But my truck made it like a champ even if it only used 2-wheel drive and could have slipped off the side of the mountain.

There is something magical about that mountain. Or maybe itʻs just the lack of oxygen and 20 degree temperature. I think its both. I cannot remember the last time I went up [to the highest point in the world from sea-level] to watch the sunset. You would not believe the range of colors to be seen as the sun goes down. Red mountains, crisp white clouds, and the bluest of blue skies that fade into the most vibrant orange sun. The sun practically melts into the sky and slowly takes over the stark landscape. And the night sky. If only I could have taken a proper photo and captured the stars. Itʻs unreal. It was a great way to end the weekend.. spending time with friends and enjoying the last of my lazy days on the Big Island.

Enjoying sunset session with friends.

EVENING SESSIONS

evening-sessions-1evening-sessions-2evening-sessions-3evening-sessions-4evening-sessions-5evening-sessions-6Been spending a lot of time in the ocean on a log.. sometimes even some two-a-days. And I’m especially enjoying those glassy evening sessions with friends. Tonight we pretty much had the break to ourselves. It doesn’t get much better than that.

I grew up surfing Honoli’i but my body must have forgotten how cold it can get. I have been pretty cold in the evenings. I’m such a sorry excuse for a girl who grew up learning and surfing there. I could easily wear a full-suit out there now. No problem. Haha. I’m kidding. But man, when that river surges.. it has a chilly bite.

But after a couple sessions of numb fingers and chattering teeth.. I’ll get over it. It’s always worth it either way. Those glassy little insiders are calling out to me.

Until the next evening sessions.

LIFE AT HOME

life-at-home-1life-at-home-2life-at-home-3life-at-home-4life-at-home-5life-at-home-6life-at-home-7life-at-home-8life-at-home-9life-at-home-10life-at-home-11life-at-home-12life-at-home-13life-at-home-14life-at-home-15life-at-home-16life-at-home-17Life has gotten back to normal since I have been home. Water and waves per usual. I was looking through my photos and really realized how much of my time is spent in and around the ocean. Most people will probably think “duh” but it has become much more apparent to me recently. Especially when you talk to friends who say they don’t have time for the beach or surfing. This realization has made me feel super blessed. ‘Cos I gotta have time fo’ dat!

Anyway, it probably helped that my sister was visiting. So in between late night work sessions and trying to figure out what I am going to be doing next in my life.. we got a lot of beach time in. Shell collecting, sliding late season swells, hiking the Makapu’u lighthouse and tide pools, and general beach lounging. This past week of doing close to nothing really helped me get back in to the groove of things. If that even makes sense.

And in between the water and waves and life questions.. I am planning my next adventure. Summer time is gonna be an epic adventure I think?! It’s all in the works now and I definitely don’t want to blow it by leaking it out just yet. Crossing my fingers!

But for now I am enjoying life at home.

THE REMEDY

the-remedy-1the-remedy-2the-remedy-3

It was really hard leaving Australia. I think when you have a really good time somewhere [for an extended amount of time] it should be. I almost feel like I left a little of myself behind.. and I need to go back and get it. I definitely need to go back and collect the rest of me. And maybe a Australian passport while I’m at it. Hah. That among other things.

I always feel a bit imbalanced after a long trip.. like I’m not quite sure where I belong. In limbo. But.. but coming home to crystal clear, glassy blue water is the best feeling in the world. It’s the best way to shed those traveling blues. And just what I needed. There is nothing a bit of salt water cannot fix. I can’t even explain the feeling I felt when I walked down to the beach. I felt like a mid-America tourist who saw the ocean for the first time. It was the best feeling after getting off a 9+ hour flight.

If you need me you know where to find me. In the remedy.

A WEEKEND GETAWAY

After a hectic last couple of weeks it was really nice to find a bit of time over the weekend to unwind. A couple of us stayed out at Ko’olina for some much needed R+R. I spent most of last weekend lounging poolside, ordering room service [which was my first time ever!!], and catching up on rest.

My family was also around for The Opening and we had a nice [early] birthday brunch.

I thoroughly enjoyed the weekend and didn’t want to leave. I absolutely love clean sheets, sleeping in, clear pool waters, and the promise of room service. Hotel life isn’t so bad. I kept wondering how I could make my life one big extended holiday weekend at a hotel. Not possible. But whoever can figure it out is a genius. Or incredibly rich. Both of which I am not quite familiar with..

Regardless.. it was a much needed weekend getaway.

THE OPENING

the-opening-1the-opening-8the-opening-2the-opening-3the-opening-4the-opening-5the-opening-6the-opening-7the-opening-9(Photos: Various, but mostly by my mom)

The whirlwind is finally done and opening night is over! I had a great night serving friends Pogmosa’s and talking to Japanese magazine/press peeps in code [I really need to learn Nihongo.] It has been a crazy last couple of days. I was almost sure it wasn’t going to come together. But it did. Oh my gosh, it did!

The biggest disappointment of the night: my lack of attention to photo-taking. It must have been from the lack of sleep and excitement of other bodies in the building [people actually came!] But I wish I had spent a little more time watching people, taking photos, and capturing moments. I really wanted to show you folks the process, the details, the stress, the blood, the breakdown moments, the snack table, the excitement, etc. I even brought my Fuji Instax to capture moments. I should have snapped a photo of a photo. There were some good ones. Bah. I wish I could have showed it all to you! At least my mom got in on some of the action!

If you didn’t get a chance to check it out on opening night it will still be there for a whole two and a half months. That gives you a lot of time to take a look. No excuses.

The opening night of Ladyslider for SpecialME. A success I think!

IN THE FOAM

in-the-foam-1in-the-foam-2in-the-foam-3in-the-foam-4in-the-foam-5

(Photos: me)

I have this deep obsession with foam from the ocean. When I am walking on the beach I feel the need to point out any time it forms in just the right way. Usually, if the person I am with is game.. I will shoot photos. I have this ongoing personal endeavor of capturing the perfect foam moment. It usually involves bare skin and sea foam. There is something beautiful about the connection between skin and sea.

One day I will capture that serendipity-like moment when it touches a leg or arm in just the right way and I have it captured it with a camera. It’s just another way for me to be connected with mother ocean. She’s fascinating in so many ways. Even down to the very conclusive of a wave.

There is just something about that foam.
