SUMMER GLOOM

(Photos by: Virgi P.) (Wetsuit: Cynthia Rowley for Roxy)

The weather hasn’t been so great lately. But that didn’t deter a couple of us [ambitious] folk from charging down to the beach for a Sunday beach day. We made ourselves a little day camp that I’m a tiny bit proud of: The chairs, the [mexican] blanket, the snacks, the drinks, the boards, the works.

And you would never guess what happened.. it rained on us. Hahaha.

Fortunately, with the gloomy weather also came a bit of wind swell. It was great, actually [no sarcastic tone intended.] It was a much needed day to feel grounded again. Or surfed out again.. a welcomed feeling I haven’t had in a very long time. It also gave me a chance to slip on my wetsuit by Cynthia Rowley for Roxy! I love that suit. I wish I could wear it to the mall and out to a club. Haha. Joking. But it is so comfortable and the perfect fit. And it works so well for Hawaii’s chillier weather!

I have to say though.. this weather is weird. I thought it was the summer time?! Don’t get me wrong I love a good downpour. But I thought it was supposed to be sunshine and butterflies this time of year? Maybe I’m just forgetful and it has been this way every year?? Regardless, I am so smitten with this glooms day Sunday.

Here to embrace the summer even in it’s gloom!

FASHION ON STAYCATION

(Photos by: TR) (Top: Roxy, Pants: India Street Find, Bikini Top: Raisin by Roxy, Head Scarf: Vintage, Jewelry: Hinu, Dezso, Michele Leong, Pouch: Samudra)

I got to spend the Memorial Day weekend in Waikiki for a little “staycation”.. something rarely done. And so I guess this is what fashion looks like when you’re on vacation on your home island?? Hah.. a little bit of this and that pulled together. I literary grabbed a bunch of stuff from my closet and threw it into a bag hoping it would all work out. No thought or pre-meditated fashion here! I suppose it did work in its own way.. a gypsy kind of way.

I have to admit: I forgot how beautiful Waikiki and it’s ocean is. All different shades of blue speckled with people on boards, yachts, and canoes. It’s kind of nice to be relaxing by the pool with live Hawaiian music playing. No wonder tourists buy into it so much!

It was such a nice little getaway. I’d hope to think it will happen more.

BEACH & BIKINI

(Photos by: TR; Bikini Top: Raisin, Bikini Bottom: Mikoh Swimwear)

I had every intention of posting about beaching at Gas Chambers weeks ago.. but it never happened. Coincidently,  the topic of high-waisted bikini bottoms came up within the last couple of days. Perfect opportunity.

Now, this is getting into some real man repeller territory. Something I think the repellizer herself would be proud of. The high-waisted bikini bottom. My boyfriend doesn’t like them. He gave me a funny look when I shimmied them on for the first time. A guy told my friend [who has the same bottoms] that she had “granny panties.” She might never be able to wear her bottom with the same confidence again.

Then there are those who rave about them. Impressed that we who brave the beach with such bottoms can really “pull it off.” People ask what brand they are, where they’re from. The real slick guys with style compliment cooly.. indubitably impressed. And in all honesty, it doesn’t really offend any one either. Young or old (no skimpy or saggy going on here!).

Obviously you know where I stand. I where them. I love them. The bottoms are unique and flattering. They keep everything tucked and never come off when I’m surfing. If anything, I probably get more attention wearing these bad boys on the beach then any of my other bikinis. Double looks.. and maybe some snickering and snide remarks. But whatever. To me, these Mikoh bottoms are fashion. The stuff that gets people talking and turns some heads. Something hard to come by in the surf/swimwear industry. So you may like it.. you may not. But that’s what it’s all about!!

And so, I will continue to brave the beach with bold bikini statement.

SHELL HUNTER DREAM

(Photos by: TR; Wetsuit: Cynthia Rowley for Roxy)

I’ve only had a few real shell diving experiences and have learned it pays to be prepared. My first time I had to learn the hard way.. or more like I had to borrow a whole bunch of stuff because I was so ill-prepared. So I’ve narrowed it down. The real deal items necessary for a good dive. This is probably a no-brainer for some people but I have to put it out there anyway.

The shell hunting essentials include: snorkel, fins, wetsuit, and shell bag.

Now.. some of you are probably thinking it is pretty ridiculous to have a wetsuit in Hawaii. But let me tell you.. they are quite essential. When you are in the water for a long period it gets quite chilly and you can’t last very long. You can even get hypothermia if you stay in the water for too long (unprepared.) A wetsuit or jacket is essential for getting quality time with the sea, salt, and shells. I’m obsessed with my Cynthia Rowley for Roxy suit. I was able to snag this one from the Quiksilver store in Waikiki but failed to get any long-sleeve ones that had sold out. I want one in every style and color!! The whole concept makes me so excited! For the first time in the surf industry they are actually making suits worth wearing! Fashion statement included!
No seal suit around here! I hope I can get my hands on a couple more. Fingers crossed.

I used to use bodyboarding fins to go diving but I have found that they are really stiff. Hurts my feet. You have stick with what things are meant for. Thus, diving fins. They may seem tacky, but quite comfortable. Also very underrated.. shell bag. I used to use an old sock. Bad, bad. When you get down with the big boys and get in some serious shell hunting time you can’t use an old sock. A well-rigged mesh shell bag is essential. Lastly, the snorkel. I usually really avoid using the tube but when you are surveying the ocean bed you can’t keep coming up for air. I used to do that. I’ve learned. I’ve learned quite a bit after diving with my friend Jennifer.. the shell hunting expert.

And so, a shell hunter dream. Well prepared and ready to go.
