BUMBLE AND BUMBLE

bumble-bumbleI was so excited when I got a package in the mail with “Bumble and Bumble” written all over it. Inside?? All kinds of goodies my hair will thank me for.. like the new Surf Shampoo, Conditioner, and Spray. It’s especially nice now that I am leaving the islands for a while and won’t have the same beached out hair that I’m used to. It’ll be quite pleasing to my hair follicles when I am in the middle of the Arizonian desert and still feel like I just finished a fun surf session with friends. I’m really excited to try it out and see how it does with my hair! I’ll be sure to let you know.

This is also a great introductory into exploring [surf, travel, and fashion] beauty. I never was much for beauty and hair products but as I get older I am really starting to see the value in taking care of my body. Especially now that my skin and hair has really taken a toll from the sun. Bumble and Bumble is a great way to start my beauty exploration. Cannot wait to snap off the top and let my hair strands soak in all it’s goodness.

A Bumble and Bumble surf experience. [Thanks Connie and Melissa!]

Finally.. decent internet and a chance to sit down and go through all the photos from the last couple weeks! I have found it a struggle to find time to log on to the world wide web when you’re traveling. But that’s when you know you’re having a good time. Good for me. Not so good for the handful of people who are might actually want to see whats going on. And by handful I am talking about my mom and sister.. and maybe my dad.

These photos are just a glimpse in to the logging days, long drives, and many adventures we went on over the course of a week. I am smitten. It has been a great trip so far. And I still have more to share! Just got back from a mini camping/surf trip in Angourie and have been surfing perfect point breaks on the Gold Coast! I feel so unbelievably blessed to be here. And blessed to just be.

Heaps of other little road trips and coastal adventures coming up soon. Cannot wait to experience it all and share it with you!

The first log of diaries down under.

PS. I don’t know if you noticed but Brooke and I both got outfitted with a couple of Two Crows Surfboards just before our trip. Just in time to make it on the plane and help us wiggle our way through Australia. I am so unbelievably stoked on my lady log. It has been the perfect board.. great for trimming and [somewhat] making my way to the nose. Boards make such a huge difference. I don’t want to toot my own horn or anything but I’m pretty sure my surfing has gotten a little bit better since my new board. There is something to be said about that. Thaaaaank you Two Crows!

MUTHER OF ALL WETSUITS

I’m in California! And I have been for the last week. Which has a lot to do with the reason why I have been a tad bit absent. So many places to go, things to do, and food to eat. I will give you a nifty little California travel dairy when I’ve collected the photos over the last week. But since I’ve been here all I have been thinking about are wetsuits [among other things]. The air is cold and the water is freezing. What I could do for a good [and fashionably sensitive] wetsuit. And there’s one particular company that knows whats up.

MOAT. I love Muther Of All Things. I’ve probably expressed this enough in recent history. It’s hard to find a decent wetsuit that accommodates surf functionality and fashion sensibility. I’m just saying.. sometimes us girls don’t want to be decked out in an all-black, masculine seal suit. And the girls at MOAT know this. Color print leggings, a subtle cutout here, contrasting fabric there, and surf jackets w/ princesslines in all the right places. That’ll make any girl wanna jump [fashionably] in to frigid cold waters.

Muther Of All Things.. Muther Of All Wetsuits.

SPECIAL PROJECT I

special-project-1special-project-2special-project-3(Photos + art: me)

Since I have been out of the water for several weeks what better way to cope with the saltwater blues than a surf/art project??  Streaming that inner retro lifestyle– Vintage Hawaiian prints, B&W photos, surf sliding adventures. I could get used to it.

But let’s be honest.. I’m ready to get in the water again. Aghhh!

Special Project I. And more to come.

SINGLE FIN FUN

single-fin-fun-1single-fin-fun-2single-fin-fun-3single-fin-fun-4single-fin-fun-5(Photos by: TR) (Wetsuit: Cynthia Rowley for Roxy)

The best part about going home over the holidays is seeing old faces and friends. I love paddling out into the lineup and catching waves with stoked out friends. That’s what I love so much about Hilo. It may not change much over the years but at least you’ll always see familiar faces. Especially in the lineup.

Okay, but let’s be real. On this particular day the waves were about 1-2 feet too big for me. That’s not saying much [judging that 2 feet is heavenly] but I couldn’t handle without a leash out there. Which is usually how I gage my willingness to surf. If I have to wear a leash I’d rather not paddle out. But I decided to get out there anyway. A friend let me borrow his single fin gun. Hello single fun. Let me tell you about this thing. His dad shaped it years ago and doesn’t require wax. No wax. Pretty interesting paddle out. I am a long boarder tried and true but it was pretty fun trying to get a handle on it.  I had to channel my inner retro surfer the entire session. With a couple extra strokes to get into the wave.

It was a single fin fun kind of day!

ANOTHER DAY, ANOTHER WAVE

another-day-another-wave-1another-day-another-wave-2another-day-another-wave-3another-day-another-wave-4another-day-another-wave-5another-day-another-wave-6another-day-another-wave-7another-day-another-wave-8another-day-another-wave-9(Photos by: Risso & me)

With all this wind and rainy weather lately I am really missing those glassy, overcast days. You would never think someone would say that. “Boy.. it sure is a beautiful overcast day.” But compared to blasting winds and sleeting rain it’s pretty prime. A week or so ago we got to slide to our hearts out. Light trade winds and plenty of ladysliding size waves.

This was the same day we brought a blow up mattress into the lineup. 1 queen size blow-up mattress, 5 girls, 1 black eye and bloody nose, and a few epic rides. I cannot believe we went out on a 2-foot day like a bunch of stoked out groms. We’re supposed to be women. Women! But I guess we still think we’re kids. Oh well. But life is still pretty good when you can sum up most of your days in the ocean and you’re not a kid anymore. With or without a black eye and a bloody nose. I cannot wait for the winds to die down again. And I’m okay with the rain as long as it mellows out the tides. Really looking forward to another session with my sliding sisters.. party waves and perfecting our  board walks.

It’s just another day on another wave.

SESSIONS OF THE FALL

(Photos by: Brooklyn Hawaii & me)

I love those in-between swells on a fall day. Its the perfect time to get in to an empty line up and practice cross stepping. Don’t get me wrong.. I love me a hefty swell [to catch up on beach walking and big wave observing of course] but I cannot tell you how good it feels to get in a good surf session with a handful of friends.

And now I’m daydreaming [in slow motion] about sliding in the sea.

I love that moment right before standing up on a wave and letting the momentum of the ocean push you forward. I wish I could freeze that moment in time. Especially because there is usually a moment during the rest of the wave when I try to walk forward and do not make it to the nose or do a wonky turn. Or wipeout. So the beginning moment is pretty dreamy for me. These early-winter swells are pretty dreamy too.

I’m pretty content with [in-between] sessions of the fall.

SISTERS OF THE SEA

(Photos by: Brooklyn Hawaii & Risso)

I love being inspired by the same girls I get to hang out and surf with everyday. I think these images speak for themselves and I don’t really want to ruin it with all of my run-on sentences. They are the kind of images that evoke feeling and wanderment. For me anyway. There is a sense of freedom and spirit in them. It reminds me so much of who the girls riding the waves truly are..

..my sisters of the sea [plus a sneaky monkey.]

NOBODY RIDES FOR FREE

(Photos by: TR)

There have been several swells rolling in and I finally got my fair share of good rides in the last couple days. It was a fun morning swell this morning.. board swapping and nose riding included. Last night I saw the most beautiful sunset while I was sliding on glass with friends. I couldn’t believe how blessed I was to experience it. The sky was illuminated in red and the sun was blood orange. It made the entire ocean glow like smooth, orange glass. I have to take a deep breath just thinking about it.

I’m not quite surfed out yet but getting there. I’d actually like to spend an entire day at the beach surfing, resting, surfing, resting, and surfing again. I cannot remember the last time I did something like that. Life happens some times and you gotta pay your dues. But those couple of hours on the water make it all worth it. You gotta work hard to slide hard. Hahaha!

Work than slide ’cause nobody rides for free!

NO TOES ON THE NOSE

(Photos by: TR)

So I had this idea [while I was surfing] that I was getting better at going to the nose. But I must have really bad vision or too much water is blasting in my eyeballs because.. after seeing these photos I realize that I’m not even on the nose. Not even a little!! I have no explanation for this other than I really need to practice my cross step. And take that extra step.

Just one step short of my happy little toes curling over the edge!

But while I was driving today I heard a commercial on the radio with Donovan Frankenreiter whose Tip of the Day was “the best surfer out there is the surfer having the most fun.” Corny, I know. But it puts a bit of light on the situation. I really appreciate those people who are always smiling and having a good time. In anything and everything. You know? Which kind of makes me think about the entire preface of this blog.. which wasn’t created because I thought I was some amazing surfer [or fashionista or wanderlust for that matter.] It’s just for the love of it all. Whether it’s surfing, fashion, traveling, running around naked, or anything else makes you and me happy. I had a lot of fun surfing over the weekend [with or without my toes in the "right" place.] And that’s all that really matters. Right?? I hope so.

No toes on the nose but I still have happy toes!
