On our last trip down to Waipi'o [just hours before I had to hop on a plane] I finally got to try out my BEEF hand plane; a holiday gift from my incredibly talented, wood-crafty friend Eddie [also known as.. Beef.] We both switched off between the hand plane and camera for a fun little, barrel-riding session. I don't typically get barreled.. but when I do it's on a BEEF hand board. Heh. Eddie even said he caught better waves within the first 10 minutes of paddling out then his previous surfboarding session.
At first I was a little hesitant to drop-in on some of the bigger waves. Waipi'o has a pretty heavy shore break and it was a shallow, clear day [allowing my depth perception to be very clear too.] Plus, the older I get the more I realize my inevitable mortality. One wave over the falls and I'm done. I actually went over the falls on one of my waves. Luckily I landed on my rump.. not my head.
I am totally hooked. Bodysurfing is so much more fun with a good hand plane. And you know me and style.. I love the idea of having my own custom, hand-carved, fish shaped plane. The perfect little retro mini board.
Time to do more bodysurfing.
