If you don’t already know from my Instagram, Nordstrom just opened the doors to their new store at Ala Moana Shopping Center in Honolulu. I am so excited to be apart of this opening for a lot of different reasons.
Nordstrom and I have got a lot of history.
Nordstrom originally opened in March 2008 when I was still studying Fashion Design at the University of Hawai’i. I felt like such a grown-up when I was offered a job in the TBD department slanging premium denim. I ended up doing my internship with Nordstrom and consider it to be my first real “career” in the industry.
So it felt like such an honor when Brian, the store manager, approached me and asked for me to be apart of the re-opening. Nordstrom helped me in so many different ways as I navigated my way through the industry and found my niche.
The new Nordstrom is pretty incredible. I would consider it as its own self-sustaining country. Haha. Not really, but really! Everything you want and need is in this store.. alcohol included. But there are 4 features of the store I am most excited to talk about. Besides the store offering a bigger floor plan and featuring more designers..
THE NEW NORDSTROM IS:
LOCAL DESIGNERS. I thought this was the coolest feature that any department store could ever do. Hawai’i is such a beautiful, unique place and has equally talented designers/artists. No other department store in Hawai’i is carrying locally made products. Actually, no other department store [anywhere] is doing it. Period. This is the only place you can find a plethora of Hawai’i made products like Everything is Jake, Me Hawaii, My Manoa, Alola, Mau House, and Seeds+Stone just to name a few! That is pretty dang rad.
RUSCELLO + HABITANT. Good food and good drinks?! The restaurant has a new menu with Hawai’i exclusive dishes (hello poke and kalua pork sliders!) and some of the oldies but goodies (hell yes panko crusted chicken salad!) But more importantly.. there is a bar next to my favorite designers (Isabel Marant, Current/Elliott, and Chloé if you care to know.) Yes, A BAR! And it gets better.. they have Hawai’i exclusive drinks (are you starting to get the picture?! A whole lot of Hawai’i and a whole lot of exclusive going on!) My personal favorite? The Coconut Grove. SO ONO! I think a lot of shopping is going to happen after a couple of drinks. And I’m not complaining!
PERSONAL STYLIST. This is something that Nordstrom has always offered but I thought I would talk a little bit about it since I utilized this service while shopping last week. I am a stylist and feel like it is such a necessary job on a photo shoot and/or creative function. The same should go for your everyday look. Nordstrom offers personal shoppers to help customers through the shopping experience. It’s always nice to have someone who will help make you look and feel good. This service is for anyone to use.. yes anyone.. for free. You don’t need to be super fancy to utilize your Nordstrom Personal Stylist. I have a lot of friends who love fashion but don’t have time to cull through racks or want a call when a certain styles or designers are delivered to the store. A personal stylist will assist you in the entire shopping experience and make sure you get everything you want and/or need. Cor was the biggest help while tried to navigate around the new store and get what I needed. Thanks Cor! :)
TAILOR SHOP. This is another department at Nordstrom that has always been around but not very many people know about. And I want to talk about how necessary this service is to anyone who cares about the way they look. Fit is one of the most important features of a good looking outfit. I cannot tell you how many times I have seen people wearing clothing that doesn’t fit right. Not all bodies and clothes are created equal. I always buy jeans that are too long and/or a dresses don’t quite fit my waist right. The Tailor Shop will take care of it. I bring clothes to the tailor shop that I didn’t even purchase at Nordstrom. The rates are really affordable and guaranteed amazing service.
Oh, and before I forget! They now have a home department too!! SO excited about that! I already got myself a couple of copper cups (for Moscow Mules!) and an amazing cutting board! I’m looking forward to going back and getting some linen sheets for our new king-sized bed!
Nordstrom offers luxury to everyone. I consider them to be the peoples department store. There is a little bit of something for everyone. And I am so happy I get to be apart of it. Sometimes I feel like I drank the cool-aid but I really think Nordstrom is a rad company! It says a lot that the same family is still running the company (I am a total fangirl and took a photo with Blake Nordstrom!) My dad still asks me, “why don’t you go work at Nordstrom again?” Haha!
Nordstrom from a local know. Check it out if you have time!
